Renowned Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been named Time Person of the Year the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has reported.
At 16 years of age, she is the youngest person to be bestowed with the honour.
Edward Felsenthal, the Time editor in chief hailed the teen activist's courage in speaking for the environment and urging action on the climate challenge.
"Thunberg has become the biggest voice on the biggest issue facing the planet—and the avatar of a broader generational shift in our culture that is playing out everywhere from the campuses of Hong Kong to the halls of Congress in Washington," Edward Felsenthal wrote as quoted by CNN
Greta Thunberg was catapulted to international fame after she boycotted school and staged a sit-in at the Swedish parliament.
Her activism has seen her address parliament's in the world and United Nations forums.
She had the opportunity to meet with the former president of the United States of America this year.
Time Magazine features individuals, groups, or ideas that have had the greatest impact for the last 12 months, whether for the good or for the worse.
The honour comes in the wake of her blistering criticism of world leaders for failing to take strong action to protect the planet, the Independent reported.
