A research poll conducted by TIFA indicates that 60 percent of Kenyans want the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, implemented through a referendum.
According to the poll, majority of Kenyans believe that the will of the people will be respected, if BBI is implemented through a referendum as opposed to implementation by Parliament.
Only 14 percent of respondents said they want the report presented to Parliament for implementation.
25% of the respondents were not conversant with what should be done after the report was released to the public.
From the survey, Coast, Nairobi, Nyanza and Rift Valley regions had the highest support for implementation of BBI through a referendum.
“All respondents regardless of whether they have read the BBI report were probed on their opinion of the direction the country should take in deciding whether or not to adopt its proposals,” Tifa said in its latest report.
The research was conducted between 17and 22 December, with 765 respondents being sampled.
Over the past few weeks, leaders have been embroiled in a heated debate regarding the suitable method for implementation of the BBI report.
