The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has asked the court to give him more time to seek evidence in tycoon Humphrey Kariuki’s tax evasion case.
Haji wants the hearing of the case pushed to January 14, 2020 to allow him supply Kariuki and eight other persons accused of tax evasion with the copies from the 7000 witnesses.
The tycoon and his co-accused are expected to defend themselves on the sh41bn tax evasion case against them.
The case was pushed to the New Year after Haji failed to present the evidence he had gather to the tycoon.
While appearing before Milimani Court chief magistrate Francis Andayi, a state prosecutor Vincent Monda said that the DPP had not managed to present the tycoon with the other persons linked to the case with the copies of the evidence hence the hearing cannot proceed as planned.
“I received letters from defence counsel Cecil Miller and Kioko Kilukumi that they want to be furnished with hard copies of the 7,000 statements and exhibits in the Sh41bn tax evasion case,” Mr Monda stated, as quoted by Daily Nation.
The DPP is also expected to present the copies of the document to other parties in the case including lawyer Ben Nzakyo.
Kariuki has maintained that he is innocent and the case against him is a scheme to bring him down in the business.
