Veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere has lifted the lid on the extreme punishment he was once subjected to by his father after engaging in what his father considered indiscipline.
Speaking on Saturday, the former Subukia lawmaker narrated how his dad repeatedly warned him against engaging in actions that could soil the reputation of their family.
But the young boy, aged around five or six would contravene this when himself and his friends accepted a soda gift from a white man who had visited their village.
He said that they were shocked as it was the first time seeing a white man, and on seeing him (Koigi) and his three friends staring, the white man thought they were admiring his soda.
Consequently, the white man ordered three drinks for each of them, which the trio drank, but by the time he was reaching home, his father was already aware of what he had done.
"Tulimpata mzungu akinywa soda yake na nilikuwa sijaona mzungu mbeleni kwa hivyo tukawa tunamwangalia tukishangaa. Mzungu akadhani tunaomba soda, akaagizia tupewe soda tatu," he said.
This translates to; "We found a white man drinking soda and being our first time to see such, we stared surprised. He thought we were after soda so he ordered three drinks for us."
He made the remarks on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show on Saturday evening, also attended by former TNA party Nakuru Chair Abdul Noor.
Koigi added thay upon getting home, his infuriated father had already bought a whole crate of soda which he was ordered to drink for embarrassing his father before villagers.
He said that what awaited him was a thorough beating if he failed to finish the entire crate, which his father said was a way of "helping him clear the whole crate".
"Niliporudi nyumbani nilipata baba amenunua kreti nzima ya soda akaniambia hii soda utakunywa umalize na usipomaliza nitakusaidia kumaliza," he added.
(Upon getting back home I found that my father hsd bought a whole crate of soda and told me to clear it, OE he would help me do it I failed)," he added.
He would later become an MP, a second liberation fighter, an assistant cabinet minister and a political detainee.
