Kenya’s bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, has received a major boost after the People’s Republic of China assured it of its support.
On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s special envoy Wang Yong said the Chinese government is ready to support Kenya's bid at the UN.
He made the remarks when he met President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi.
Mr Yong said the Chinese government is confident Kenya has what it takes to win the seat, and protect interests of African countries in the council.
“We firmly support the reforms of the UN Security Council and believe that Kenya will help to increase the voice of African countries at the UN Security Council,” Mr Wang said.
Wang also congratulated President Kenyatta over his commitment in the war against graft.
Kenya is facing stiff competition from Djibouti in the race for the seat. Tanzania and Algeria are among countries that have already pledged to support Kenya's bid.
