Mr Cheruiyot claimed that the DCI was going for people with nothing to do with the alleged assassination plot on the deputy president instead of going for the real culprits.

"We want to categorically tell the DCI that stop chasing squirrels in the name of fake letters and go for the antelope that is the plot to assassinate none other than the deputy president of the Republic of Kenya," said Cheruiyot.

The senator spoke after attending a court session on charges pressed against Itumbi.

The alleged assassination plot on Deputy President William Ruto has raised the political temperatures in the country with different political factions trading strong words over the matter.

Sleuths from the DCI have launched investigations into the alleged plot even as they seek to establish the source of the so-called fake letter that carried the claims.

DP Ruto has not publicly weighed in on the claims that a plot to assassinate him is afoot.

Cabinet secretaries alleged to have hatched the plot did not write a statement when they appeared at the DCI, saying that the DP had not written a statement on the claims.
