The Former Vice President is now expected to travel to the nation before Tuesday, October 15 to oversee the process.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland confirmed Kalonzo’s appointment on Monday in a press statement released to media houses.

Others who have been named in the team set to observe the elections are former Attorney-General Musa Mwenye, Cambridge University lecturer Ms Emma Lee Wilson, Head of Africa Programme, Chatham House Dr Alex Vines and South Africa Electoral Commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku.

The commonwealth team is expected to present the union with a report on the election before, during and after the process.

“I am pleased that through this group of eminent persons, the Commonwealth will once again be present to demonstrate its support to the people of Mozambique,” she said, as quoted by K24.

The team will be in the country starting from October 10 to 20. The Former Vice President has wide experience in election matters. He contested for the Presidential seat in 2007 and lost to retired President Mwai Kibaki.

In 2013, he joined Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Amolo Odinga in the Cord alliance but they also lost to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.
