President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto are on the verge of completing their term in office before the accomplishment of their promise on stadiums. The projects have stalled because of budget cuts.

Documents, seen by Standard, show that the government has not completed the stadia it promised in both 2013 and 2017 general elections.   

Sports Kenya has lamented that the National Treasury has frustrated the docket during the last four financial years with endless budget cuts. The contractors hired by different agencies have abandoned their construction sites. The stalling of the projects could see tax payers lose millions that had been paid towards the project.

Some state officers have also reportedly colluded with contractors to pocket millions set aside for the project hence frustrating their Sports Docket.A report from the National Assembly Sports Committee shows that a firm was paid Sh88 million for Marsabit Stadium but only cleared the bushes. 

While appearing before the committee in parliament, Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto said that the docket has suffered huge budget cuts, which have affected its performance in different ways. 

 “At the inception of the procurement process, 2016/17, there was a proposed budget of Sh2,735,000,000, however, this was later rationalised to Sh424,813,522,” said Metto, as quoted by Standard.

“2017/2018 Sports Kenya suffered a budget cut from an allocation of Sh100, 00,000 to Sh25,000,” he added.

He also lamented that they have been torn between a rock and a hard place following the reduction in the funds allocated to them.
