Five National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) officials alongside a trader and a chief have been arrested in connection to the maize scandal.
According to a press statement from the Ethnics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC), the arrests follows ongoing investigations into the purchase of maize from farmers where it is believe traders were allowed to illegally supply the produce to the NCPB.
The suspects were arrested in Eldoret and Kisumu.
"The commission concluded investigations and forwarded the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions who upon review concurred with the recommendations of the commision and gave consent for arrest and prosecution of the suspects in court with various offences," reads part of the statement signed by the EACC Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo.
Among charges the arrested are facing include; conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property and willful failure to comply with the law relating to the management of public funds.
The suspects arrested were named by EACC as Kisumu Silo manager Willy Kipkoech Kosgei, Eldoret Silo manager Renson Kibet Korir, Soi extension officer Thomas Kipkurgat Sang, Kisumu deputy manager Jeremiah Omustane Omanyi, Sionim Chief David Bargetuny Korir and Trader Rodney Kimutai among others.
They are expected to be arraigned in a Kisumu court today (Tuesday).
