A 20-year-old man, Abdirahman Abdi Rashid, was on Wednesday evening nabbed with Sh3 million cash in a Nairobi-bound bus.
The man was arrested in Mwingi, Kitui County as police carried out a crackdown on public services vehicles.
As the operation continued, three buses from North Eastern were impounded by multi-agency security officials who found contraband goods in the vehicles. A Probox with questionable cargo was also nabbed at an inspection roadblock at Mutwangombe.
“Our office, in conjunction with the multi-agency team, impounded over 100 sacks containing banned charcoal, bales of polythene bags, boxes of canned fish, boxes of relief tablets, rolls of clothing materials, among other goods. The impounded public service vehicles also had excess passengers on board,” Mwingi Central Sub-County Police Commander, Peter Mutuma told K24 Digital.
Rashid, is being held at Mwingi Police station as the police continue with investigations as to how Rashid got hold of Sh3 million. He is currently being held at Mwingi Police Station.
Mutuma said some of the impounded goods were 20 bags of charcoal, 56 rolls of fabric, 37 bales of banned plastic bags and 6 boxes of canned fish. He warned Kenyans against illegal trade.
“Logging is illegal in Kenya. People should look for alternative sources of fuel, and not use charcoal, which is made out of felled trees,” said Mutuma.
