A majority of Kenyans probably have not had a chance of handling Sh1 million cash, this is a figure they only read in newspapers and hear on Televisions being mentioned.
Well, don’t worry so much if you have not yet made your million because, in Kenya, there are only a few millionaires.
For Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago, it is more of a story that many can resonate with, he made his first million not as a governor but as a businessman.
Speaking at the county headquarters in Eldoret town on Friday when he officially launched the internship program, Mandago said while working at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) he only earned Sh69,000 a month and by the time he was leaving, a million shillings was just a dream for him.
“When I resigned from TSC, while I was a senior director, I had never made a million. My salary was barley Sh69,000,” said Mandago.
“You will be surprised that I earned my first million through business,” he added.
The governor was advising the interns on the need not to focus too much on getting employment but acquiring the skills to enable them to open up their own businesses and employ more jobless youths.
“By the time I was venturing into politics in 2013, I had over Sh15 million in my account, earned from the business which I used during my campaigns,” he noted.
