Political analyst Brian Weke has criticised Kenyans and political players opposed to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

The initiative is the product of President Uhuru Kenyatta's truce with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on March 9, 2018.

However, the initiative has been facing opposition from a section of politicians allied to Deputy President William Ruto, who claim it is exclusive and has hidden intentions.

However, speaking on Saturday, Weke faulted those claiming that the BBI is meant to push for a referendum, saying that it would have been done so by now if that was indeed the plan.

He defended the BBI, terming it a sincere attempt to save the country from recurrent political issues, hence the formation of the BBI taskforce which has been seeking opinions from Kenyans.

"If the BBI was indeed a Raila-Uhuru affair, wouldn't they have announced a referendum on the same day? They instead brought in experts who toured the country seeking Kenyans' opinions (Kama kweli BBI ingekuwa ya Raila na Uhuru si wangetangaza referendum hiyo siku? Lakini wameleta experts na wametembea Kenya nzima wakitafuta maoni," he said.

The former Makadara MP hopeful made the remarks on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show.

He called upon Kenyans to await the outcome of the task force report and compare them to those of the Thirdway Alliance Party's Punguza Mizigo referendum bid, before making any judgements.

This follows Raila's claims that the task force will propose a referendum that seeks to among others, expand the executive arm of government and reintroduce the parliamentary governance system.

"Punguza Mizigo is not fully good or bad, let's check its good and bad contents, and do the same to the BBI when the report comes out (Hii Punguza Mizigo sio mbaya yote na sio nzuri yote. Tuangalie nini mbaya na nini nzuri, BBI ikija pia tuipige msasa)," he added.
