Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi has opened up about events which surrounded 2013 polls.
While at his home, Mudavadi has noted that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto drove into his compound where they wanted to see him.
“Our domestic detail announced that Uhuru and Ruto were outside. They wanted to see me. I ushered them in at once,” the former Deputy Prime Minister writes in his book, titled 'Soaring above the Storms of Passion'.
During the meeting, he says, Uhuru and Ruto vowed to support him against Raila Odinga. A memo was drafted.
The two were facing crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court at the Hague.
“In short they were asking me to join them in the election effort. They were concerned that the ICC saga could come in their way,” he recalls.
The team agreed to draft the memorandum of understanding on how to share government as Ruto and Uhuru went back to inform their teams
“It was agreed to give him two or so days. Meanwhile, we would all get busy behind the scenes, laying out a formidable campaign plan,” he says.
However, days later, he would see Uhuru renouncing his support, blaming 'demons' for misguiding him.
“The demons were cautioned not to try and reap where they had not sown, or gather where they had not scattered. We understood we were the demons. I have wondered often times how we became demons when we never invited anybody into our space to ask them to step down for us,” he laments.
