Police in Nairobi are probing an incident where a forex bureau operator was reportedly robbed of his money while trying to help a politician to beat the deadline for exchanging the old notes.
This comes only weeks before the closure of the window that had been given by the Central Bank of Kenya for Kenyans to return the old generation Sh1000 notes for the new ones.
He reported to the Capitol Hill police station that he was robbed by a broker of $150,000 while taking it to the politician who wanted to change his Sh15 million old notes on Saturday night.
He said that after packing the money, he entered into a vehicle which the broker, who is known well to him, had arrived in, after the broker had sought his help on behalf of the said politician.
However, he said, he (the broker) ended up forceful taking the money when they reached Upper Hill area, threatening the compainant in the process.
Confirming the incident, Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo said that investigations have been kicked off into the matter.
Announcing the changes in June 1, CBK governor Patrick Njoroge said that the move is aimed at taming illicit dealings which were being done using the old notes which will be rendered useless beginning October 1.
Njoroge has since made it clear that the deadline will not he extended at all.
