Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has ordered the closure of meat outlets in six major supermarkets in Nairobi.
He further ordered county health officials to conduct a routine inspection.
“I have directed the county health officers to conduct daily inspections in all meat eateries so that we protect Nairobi residents from consuming poisonous food,” stated Sonko.
Following Sonko's directive, Nairobi County Health Executive Mohamed Dagane came up with a task-force which will conduct the inspection on meat samples from 40 supermarkets around the city.
Dagane also noted that officials from the six supermarkets will be arraigned in court.
“We exist to protect human lives," said Dagane.
Their sentiments were echoed by Deputy Director of Public Health Wilson Lang’at who promised to expand the inspection further to butcheries and all eateries in Nairobi.
“We will continue with the tastes in all the major supermarkets as well as eateries in town,” Lang'at said.
This comes after sample results from top six supermarkets in the city revealed excessive use of preservatives in the meat.
In a crackdown done on Thursday afternoon, top supermarkets were found to have exceeded the maximum required limit of preservative.
Some of these supermarkets include; Tuskys Supermarket along Kenyatta Avenue, The point Naivas limited Buruburu, Muthaiga fine Meat Limited and Naivas Gateway Mall among others.
The crackdown comes just days after media houses exposed the use of excess preservatives to keep meat for long and maintain an attractive look.
