The digital process will reduce the time used to test and process the certificates manually.

The move comes after the public raised concerns over the foods consumed in the city since the health department concerned had failed in testing and accrediting food handlers for almost a year.

Many food handlers had also been arrested for operating unlicensed.

Mohammed Sahal, Nairobi Health Chief Officer said that food handlers will acquire the certificates only after the submission of their laboratory results is checked and proved.

“Food handling testing laboratories are currently being interlinked with other departments to make it easier to test and certify food handlers. Once complete, they will be required to make payments through a mobile money transfer service to be announced,” said Sahal as quoted by Standard.

County-owned laboratories such as STC Casino has already commenced training food handlers on the digitised process.

The county government is determined to start the program at the other laboratories.

“The process will also be rolled out to other laboratories in due time. We want to make sure the process is simple, fast and secure,” Sahal noted.
