Police in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County are holding a woman accused of dealing in fake new generation notes.
Monica Wangui Kinya, 38, was on Thursday nabbed while attempting to use the Sh1,000 forged money to buy clothes at a local shop and arraigned in court on Friday.
The incident was confirmed by area Police Commander Rashid Mohammed who said that the woman in question hails from the neighbouring Nakuru County.
“From our investigations, the suspect, who hails from Nakuru, had fake three Sh1,000 notes which she planned to use at the market to buy goods," he said.
The police boss said that the woman was attempting to use the money on a market day, and was given away by the shop owner upon realising that the money was fake.
Her attempts to secure a bond before an area court where she was charged with being in possession of papers resembling Kenyan currency were futile.
The presiding magistrate directed that that suspect who pleaded innocent be held until next Tuesday to give more room for investigations, as was requested by the prosecution.
The police boss now wants area locals to be on high alert when dealing with strangers seeking to buy products from them using the new notes.
“Since the new currency notes have started circulating, I urge the residents and traders to scrutinise the notes carefully and report any cases of fake currency to the police,” he advised.
