Kwale Woman Representative Zuleikha Juma Hassan has revealed how she beat the security to access the Parliament chambers with a baby.
Revealing that she had no intentions of going against the Standing Orders of Parliament which prohibit strangers from accessing the chamber, the MP says she only learned on Tuesday that her nanny would not be available on Wednesday.
She then opted to carry the baby after consulting her husband because that could not bar her from parliamentary duties.
“I said this is enough. Why should I miss work just because I have a baby? This made me reflect that if I don’t do it now, I should forget about it altogether.I called my hubby and explained to him and he gave me the go-ahead," she said as quoted by Nation.
Zulekha Hassan was lucky to sneak into the Chamber using the rear entrance unnoticed by security due to an absent-minded disorderly and she went to the front row to attract the attention of the Speaker.
“He tried to block me but it was very late. I was already in the Chamber by the time he was pleading. I went straight to the front row where I wanted the Speaker to notice me easily and started breastfeeding my little angel," she added.
Upon realising Zulekha's presence with a baby, temporary Speaker Christopher Omulele ordered the MP be ejected from the Chambers.
The National Assembly on Friday night denied claims made by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) that Zulekha did not handle properly.
"The Standing Orders obligate the Speaker to order a member who conducts himself or herself in a disorderly manner to leave the Chamber. Ms Hassan left the Chamber in compliance with the Speaker’s directive,” said Clerk Michael Sialai.
