The High Court has suspended increment of parking fees in Nairobi city.
The court made the pronouncement after Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) filed a case protesting the increment of parking fees from Sh200 to Sh400.
High Court Judge James Makau directed that the notice issued on Monday by City Hall Director of Parking Service Tom Tinega be suspended until the case is heard and determined.
The new parking fees were scheduled to take effect from Wednesday, December 4, 2019.
However, Cofek objected the move arguing that it will greatly affect Kenyans who are already struggling with hard economic times.
“The purported notice to increase parking fees with effect from December 4 is unreasonable, irrational, unjust and offends the spirit of the Constitution. If implemented, the rights of consumers will be greatly infringed,.
“Most vehicle owners will not afford to pay the increased parking charges because of the harsh economic reality," Cofek's lawyer said as quoted by Nation.
The case is set to be heard on 21 January, 2020.
