Government has released cash meant for steering Universal Health Care (UHC) piloting programme.
The Sh1.8 billion will be used to purchase drugs and other medical equipment, which will then be supplied to the four counties where the programme is being piloted.
The funds were channeled to Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) which will oversee the utilization of the funds as planned.
"Other than other issues which may be affecting us, UHC dream is being realized. And one way of fulfilling the dream is by having full amount released so as to help in facilitating the piloting," Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki said.
Kemsa CEO Jonah Manjari indicated the agency will disburse the supplies effectively.
"All products are there, and with the money having been released, we will ensure timely supply," noted Jonah Manjari.
However, UHC has though encountered some problems which have seen it not deliver its mandate as expected.
Delayed funding has seen the pilot counties face challenges without funds to run the programme.
The four counties chosen for piloting of the programme included Kisumu, Machakos, Isiolo and Nyeri.
The Sh3.2 billion project targeted a total population of utmost 3.2 million Kenyans with its full implementation being intended for 2019/2020 fiscal year.
