A day after Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha wrote to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) to probe the recruitment of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Nairobi student leaders have now declared their support for Prof Isaac Mbeche for the position.
The University of Nairobi Students’ Association (UNSA) on Sunday urged the national government to intervene in the leadership crisis at the institution as soon as possible to allow for the smooth running of operations.
The students support Magoha’s decision to revoke the appointment of Prof Stephen Kiama. In a statement read by Byron Ochieng, main campus Secretary-General, the student leaders said that they were behind Magoha after he read malice in the process of the appointment of the VC into office.
“Earlier there had been claims that there was mischief in the process of Vice-Chancellor appointment…we want to say that this time round that matter be investigated as called upon by the Education CS,” read the statement in part.
On his part, UNSA Vice President Nyakundi Ian said that there is no way the institution is going to be managed by three Vice Chancellors. He asked Kiama to pave way for Mbeche to take over the leadership in peace. Kiama has since maintained that he was duly appointed into the capacity and he has no intentions to quit any soon.
