Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials on Tuesday arrested two people in Mombasa for tax evasion.
The two, Nabeel Qureshi and Salman Rizvi were said to have been involved in a series of tax evasion scheme that costs the country millions of shillings.
''Today in Mombasa, KRA arrested directors Nabeel Qureshi & Salman Rizvi of Ameen Motors Ltd suspected of being involved in a tax evasion scheme,'' said KRA in a tweet.
According to KRA, their company, Ameen Motors Ltd, between January 2013-December 2018, imported a total of 599 units of motor vehicles worth a total of Sh217 million.
The cars were sold and the proceeds from their sale amounting to Sh658 million banked.
''However, the company fraudulently declared only Ksh 33 million in 2017 while declaring NIL income for the rest of the years thereby evading tax payment of Ksh. 126 million. Further, the directors have been forming and abandoning companies whenever they accumulate tax liabilities,'' noted KRA.
Today, Wednesday, the two will be arraigned in court.
KRA has nabbed various people and companies who ere involved in tax evasion schemes in the past, and charged for the same.
The tax collection body has on various occasions called on the people to pay their correct amounts of tax to help the country through tax collected.
