Subukia Catholic shrine in Nakuru is a holy place that has attracted many people of all faiths, both in and outside the country. The shrine was constructed on 200 acres of land at the top of Subukia hills, five kilometers away from the highway.
As reported by the daily nation, the shrine was constructed early back in 1980 after Pope John Paul II asked Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops to come up with a place for national prayers.
In 1984, it's said that the pilgrim began flocking after Cardinal Maurice Otunga officially opened the shrine and it was named a holy place by believers from other faiths.
It's also said that the shrine has several features that are of significance to catholic faith which include, church, cross, spring, and bookshop.
The place is also said that it has Several Catholic priests from the Conventual Franciscan Friars order who welcome the visitors who don't understand what confession entails and bless them.
The confession always starts at a monumental structure known as “the Way of the Light”, where meditation starts as pilgrims begin walking along a path towards a big cross on top of a hill via grotto, a small chapel dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus for intercessory prayers.
They also recite the rosary as they climb the hill to symbolize the suffering of Jesus as he carried the cross on his way to the crucifixion site.
Upon the arrival at the top of the shrine, there is a spring of 'SPECIAL' WATER which people are allowed to drink as its believed to have healing power and God's blessings.
Despite the shrine having a busy calendar, Father Mochianto revealed that they always have special arrangements exist for different groups to visit the site
For instance, women from all parts of the country meet for prayers in February while men meet in the first week of May. The shrine has, however, become a popular site for family retreats and also believers in the country
