Lawyer Ambrose Weda now says that not all the lawyers in Mike Sonko's legal team are there with some intent of helping him come out of his ongoing corruption court case.
Sonko has a 12-lawyer team led by Cecil Miller, with the others including senators Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet), Mutula Kilonzo (Makueni) and Makueni MP Dan Maanzo.
Weda, a High Court advocate has said that some of the lawyers, especially the politicians, could be taking full advantage of the opportunity to raise their professional profile.
He added that some might want to be seen as defending the governor, hoping for political compensation from the people from Sonko's ethnic community back in Ukambani.
"People know that representing a high-profile case like Sonko's raises your professional profile. There are also politicians playing politics, people from Kamba region want to be there to appeal to the Kamba people," said the lawyer.
Weda, also a member of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) board and an ex-chair of the SONY sugar company board, spoke on KBC English Service, Wednesday.
He stated that the other factor is the money part of it, where the group could be seeking to benefit from the county boss fat pockets.
"Sonko also seems like someone who has money, so people want to earn the money," he added.
The county boss was on Wednesday released from custody after five days in detention.
