Mombasa is full of drama. In May 2013, a village was brought to a standstill by a cat that had stuck its head in a jerrycan. Locals believed the poor cat was a jini or a result of witchcraft, which made them not to rescue the poor cat for almost one week.

The Kiembeni residents also warned journalists including Ferdinand Omondi who tried to rescue it.

The villagers were afraid to rescue the animal because weird tales surrounding it are common at the coast. People narrate how male cats have the ability to give birth to kittens and if disturbed, the cats in question vanish into thin air never to return home.

Some allege that there are human beings who have transformed into black cats. Such beings are said to harass society members making cats animals that command respect and fear among locals.

With the said juicy stories about this friendly animal, Kiambeni villagers were not ready to offend the cat nor let it free.

However, Kenyans who have never witnessed the said power of cats at the coast accussed locals of believing too much in the dark world.

It took the intervention of The Kenya Society for the Protection & Care of Animals (KSPCA) to rescue the trapped cat.
