Female lawmakers have set a condition for supporting a presidential candidate in the 2022 general election.
Led by Kandara MP Alice Wahome, the lawmakers said they will only rally behind an aspirant who pledges to support women in leadership.
“The government that we form in 2022 must have enough room for women, youth and men," Wahome said on Friday.
The second-time MP spoke when she led more than 40 women lawmakers allied to ‘Inua Mama, Jenga Taifa’ caucus at a function in Meru County.
Wahome lashed out at the proponents of the scrapping of Women Representative seat and vowed to lead other women in opposing the proposal which she observed was aimed at 'isolating' them.
"It will not be business as usual. The constitution is only nine years old yet we hear people making suggestions that isolate us. There is no way we are going to accept that women are the burden of this country,” she said.
Speaking at the same function, Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa said women will reject any amendment to the constitution that seeks to remove Women Rep post while creating other positions.
“Affirmative action is an equaliser ... there is need to empower women. We are not seeking seats on a silver platter. We shall resist any attempt by some few individuals who want to create posts for themselves,” said Jumwa.
The much-hyped Punguza Mizigo Bill 2019 led by Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot proposes scrapping of Women Rep seat as well as reduction of the number of MPs from 416 to 147.
