Trouble is looming in Raila Odinga's ODM following sharp divisions among his lieutenants from Kisii and Nyamira Counties.
For the past one year, realignments have been taking place with retirement of Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae playing a major role.
On Wednesday, Mr Odinga held a closed-door meeting with leaders allied to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, who is slowly preparing to venture into politics.
Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ong'era, a close ally of Odinga and CS Matiang'i, confirmed that politics did take center stage in the meeting.
"Together with my colleagues, we held talks with Prime Minister Raila Odinga. We discussed current political dispensation," she said without elaborating.
While the team has been presenting Dr Matiang'i to Mr Odinga as their defacto leader for a higher political office, another team has been pulling parallel strings.
Viewed as staunch ODM supporters, the team under ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire, questions the integrity of Dr Matiang'i, who it accuses of arrogance.
In July this year, the team, represented by Kisii ODM chair Sam Omwando and Richard Kaka of Nyamira, also toured Capitol Hill for a meeting with Odinga.
However, the meeting was rescheduled to a later date because Mr Odinga had jetted out of the capital to his Kisumu home to attend an emergency.
"You cannot support and outsider yet we have a functional party. This amounts to violation of the party constitution. We shall have this matter explained," Omwando had warned.
A member of the team, who spoke in confidence following Wednesday's meeting, accused Governor John Nyagarama and James Ongwae of infiltrating into ODM affairs.
"This is a strategic meeting to counter the one we were to hold in July. Their agenda is to counter us but that will come with casualties," he complained.
Dr Matiang'i and Mr Bosire do not see each other eye to eye. Bosire is on record for accusing Matiang'i of rigging him in 2017 polls at Kitutu Masaba.
Also, the loyal ODM troops under Bosire accuse Matiang'i of lining up certain candidates in Ongwae and Nyagarama succession race in 2022 polls.
