Former Nyandarua North MP the late Josiah Mwangi Kariuki, popularly reffered to as JM Kariuki underwent a serious assault moments to his March 2, 1975 assassination.
This included the knocking out of his teeth by then President Jomo Kenyatta's bodyguard Wanyoike Thungu who was not happy with Kariuki's criticisms of Kenyatta.
It happened that before his abduction, after which he would be found dead at a city morgue 10 days later, JM was in a meeting with Thungu, General Service Unit Commandant Ben Gethi and others at the Hilton Hotel.
Thungu was sitting in a panel that was questioning JM over his attacks on Kenyatta, where he angrily sought to know why JM would "so much disrespect the President as to go around the country insulting the head of state as if they were age-mates!”
When he stood to explain himself, JM encountered a strong punch that knocked off all of his front teeth, which be sought to respond to by shooting Thungu with his pistol.
However, Gethi, well aware that the MP was armed, reached out for his pistol and shot him on the shoulder before he (JM) could reach for his own hidden in his jacket.
The MP was abducted minutes later for fear that his hospitalization should expose his assaulters, and murdered at Ngong' Forest, after which his body left for hyenas to feast on.
His decomposing body was found untouched by the wild animals and taken to the City Mortuary where it was identified by his three widows 10 days later.
