Philgona Arodi, the mother to a deceased KCSE candidate in Kisumu, has spoken of the agony that has befallen her.
Arodi's son, Stephen Oluoch who was a student at Joel Omino Secondary School is reportedly said to have died after being assaulted by school guards.In an exclusive interview with Hivisasa on Tuesday, Arodi narrated that the rain started beating in September after her son was locked up at Nyalenda police cells.“There was a day I was called and told that my son was arrested after wrestling a school guard and school president, which I hardly believed because my son was a humble person,” said Arodi.Arodi maintained that her son was arrested after police officers allegedly confiscated a piece of rolled marijuana in his bag.“When my son was leaving school, his bag was searched and nothing was found but when I went to pick him from police cells, I was given his bag, pen, a rubber, and a piece rolled of marijuana,” she said.A day after getting Oluoch out of the cells, he started complaining of sharp pain on his neck, prompting her to take him to hospital.“I was supposed to pick the suspension letter from school but due to increasing pain, I had to take Oluoch to the hospital,” she noted.Oluoch who was a KCSE candidate at Joel Omino Secondary School was presented before the school board where he was grilled.Arodi confessed that her son at one point smoked bhang but later stopped adding that at the time of his arrest, he had not smoked it nor did he carry it.“The board questioned Oluoch, who agreed that he was smoking bhang but during his arrest, he had not smoked,” Arodi revealed. The outcome by the board was a pardon and Oluoch was allowed to resume his learning. On November 3, a day before the start of KCSE, his mother narrated “we met with Oluoch where I bought him calculator, pens and other materials he could use in the examination. I gave him Sh500 and Sh30 for bus fare but he decided to walk to Nyalenda instead of boarding a matatu.”A few hours later, an unknown number called her and when she picked up, a woman told her that her son had collapsed and died on the spot in Nyalenda.The deceased mother, who is a widow is calling upon well-wishers to help her raise cash for an autopsy.“I’m just a widow, I am helpless but would like to know what caused to my son’s death. He died a day to exams,” she pleaded. Kisumu Education boss Isaac Atebe says he has not received any report concerning the student ‘s demise from Arodi, advising her to report the issue to the relevant authorities.“It would have been good if the parent complains and report the issue to the police,” said Atebe.Oluoch ‘s body is still lying at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
