Candidates vying for Orange Democratic Movement party ticket for Kibra constituency by-election must wait until September 7th, the party has stated.
On Sunday, the party had scheduled August 31st as the day for nominations in which 11 candidates are set to battle out for the ticket.
The party's Director of Elections Junet Mohamed said the party will not risk to conduct the exercise on Saturday, adding that security must be enhanced.
Our Party will conduct nominations for the Kibra Constituency by election on September 7, 2019 (next Saturday). This is to not disrupt the ongoing equally critical exercise of census, which has stretched security organs of our country," he said.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has set November 7th as the date for by-election in which the successor of Ken Okoth will be known.
ODM rivals Jubilee will nominate a candidate through direct nomination on Friday which Amani National Congress picked Eliud Owalo on Wednesday as candidate.
Mr Raila Odinga, ego served the region for 20 years, on Sunday promised free and fair nominations. He said majority of members were for competitive nominations.
“On Tuesday they will be vetted by the party to establish whether they are loyal members of the party or they have just come to contest,” Mr Odinga said.
He added: “We want the exercise to be done in a peaceful environment because we want to show the country that Kibra is mature politically. If you don't win it is not the end of your political career.”
The party is keen to avoid violence, which is synonymous to her previous activities. Kibra is one of ODM strongholds in Nairobi's 17 constituencies.
