Just like other communities, Luos have a number of names that are popular nationally and, therefore, easy to pronounce and spell for many people, including outsiders.
These include, Onyango, Odhiambo and Otieno. However, we are now seeing the rise of new titles, especially with politicians, which are giving people from other communities a hard time pronouncing.
Here are some of them.
1.Anyang’ Nyong'o
Most people from separate communities, especially those from Mt Kenya, are having it really rough when it comes to the name of the Kisumu Governor.
On several occasions, you will hear his fellow politicians give funny versions of their own pronunciation, others coming up with Nyang’ Nyong’ and others Nyong’ Nyong’.
Honestly, the name is challenging but not to his tribesmen.
2. John Mbadi
This too is a big problem for some people, with many people not getting the Suba South lawmaker’s name right. Many call him Bandi, Badi and Mbandi.
Many know him for his position as the Minority Leader in the National Assembly.
3. Raila Odinga.
He is the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader and de-facto opposition leader after skipping the October 26 presidential re-run where Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot emerged the runners-up.
Most people from Central Kenya refer to him as Raira and Laila.
