Apart from the unavoidable political rhetoric, Raila is fond of lifting his right hand (as pictured) at several major funerals he has attended.

During the burial of Mzee Peter Musyoka Mairu, father to his former presidential running mate Kalonzo Musyoka, Raila performed his trademark mourning style by raising his whisk that was in the right hand. Whenever he does not have the whisk, he raises his bare hand.

Odinga arrived late in the company of several people including business mogul Jimmy Wanjigi. He proceeded to view the body then was received by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka then proceeded to greet other guests including President Uhuru Kenyatta before taking his seat.

This has also been witnessed in other major funerals in the nation including burials of IEBC ICT Manager Chris Msando, Senator George Khaniri’s sister in Vihiga and businessperson Jacob Juma.

In other instances, Raila Odinga has donned traditional regalia. He mourned in this manner during the burial of Senator Otieno Kajwang’. Raila also paid his last respect to the late Vice President Kijana Wamalwa in this special way.

His unique style has also been noted internationally. When he went to Ghana for Koffi Annan’s burial, Odinga raised his right hand while viewing Annan's body.
