A top US official has hinted at possible deaths inflicted on Kenyan forces on Sunday at Camp Simba in Lamu.
Suspected Al-Shabaab militants stormed the base which plays home to US and KDF troops early morning, inflicting massive destruction.
Jim Risch, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, hinted that there could be casualties on both KDF and American troops.
“I am saddened to learn that American and Kenyan lives were lost during a heinous terrorist attack on a Kenya-US operating base early this morning,” Republican Senator from Idaho tweeted," he wrote.
According to a statement released by KDF, five Al-Shabaab militants were killed during the operation that took nearly six hours.
US Africa Command (AFRICOM), which coordinates America troops in Africa, confirmed that one US Serviceman and two American contractors were killed during the attack.
Gen Stephen Townsend also said in a statement that two soldiers from KDF were injured. No deaths were reported on the Kenyan side.
"As we honour their sacrifice, let's also harden our resolve. Alongside our African and international partners, we will pursue those responsible for this attack and al-Shabab, who seek to harm Americans and US interests," he noted.
Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, adding that they destroyed seven aircraft.
