Stephen Mukangi and a colleague of his were reportedly attacked on their way to attend to a distress call near the Wilson Airport which they were manning on Saturday.

The incident happened when two uniformed men, dressed like fellow offocers, sought their help, claiming that their car had  broke down.

Mukangi and his coleague were manning the watchtower when the men sought their help, requesting them to accompany them to the car on the nearby Southern Bypass.

“They told the GSU officers they needed assistance from them at the scene where their car had developed mechanical problems. They claimed to be police officers,” an officer aware of the incident told the Standard.

He added that two other people, also in uniform, later emerged and tried to grab Mukangi's AK47 riffle, which led to a scuffle, after which he was shot at close range.

He said that Mukangi was shot as he fought hard, while the other escaped with a shot to his leg, after losing his gun too, and is recuperating in hospital.

The incident was confirmed by Langata OCPD Gregory Mutiso.

He said that police sent to investigate the incident found two spent cartridges, two magazines with 60 bullets and an empty butt.
