The decision by cabinet to rename Moi Day to Huduma Day has been dismissed as meaningless by former Permanent Secretary Prof James Kiyiapi.
Cabinet under President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday renamed Moi Day, which was reinstated by court last year following a petition by a Kenyan.
The day is usually celebrated on 10th October every year but was temporarily scrapped upon the promulgation of the new constitution in 2010.
"Cabinet also approved renaming of Moi Day, which falls on 10th October, to Huduma Day. This is in line with former President Daniel Arap Moi’s desire that the day be commemorated as a day of service and volunteerism. Renaming of Boxing Day to Utamaduni Day was also approved," State House said in a tweet.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had hinted renaming of Boxing Day as well during Jamuhuri Day celebrations last week at Nyayo Stadium.
But Prof Kiyiapi, who also contested for the presidency in 2013, insisted that the decision is meaningless to Kenyans.
"HUDUMA DAY? Every day is a DAY to serve! Another meaningless policy. Looking forward a day when we focus more on truly revolutionary ideas," he said.
Retired President Daniel Moi initiated the day to celebrate his day of taking over from Jomo Kenyatta in 1978.
