The High Court on Wednesday rejected an application to stop the vetting Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s deputy nominee.
The court dismissed an application filed by one Peter Adhiambo Agoro, who sought to stop the process after the county boss was barred from accessing his office over graft.
In his application, Agoro said that the appointment of Anne Kananu Mwenda was unlawful and wanted the process of vetting stopped.
He also wanted the court to block the county boss from nominating any other person to assume the position until the case is heard and determined. The county assembly had held a meeting to address the matter.
Speaker Beatrice Elachi, Sonko said that the house decided to convene the sitting because of the gravity of the matter.
“…the complexity in Nairobi became more intricate following my arraignment in court December 2019, and the subsequent bail terms that, among other things, require me, as Governor, to stay out of office until the determination of the matter,” read the letter.
On Saturday, Elachi had asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga to intervene into the wrangles of the county after the county boss was blocked from office.
The governor has since maintained that the nomination of the deputy is in line with the mandate he was given following his election into office.
