A study carried out at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret has revealed that ugali increases the chances of a person contracting cervical cancer.
The study was done on a number of women at the facility.
It linked increased cases of cervical cancer to the intake of food. Maize was found out to be a great cause, especially that which has aflatoxin.
The study further revealed that an increased rate in aflatoxin-contaminated foods, especially maize and milk has led to increased causes of cervical cancer.
This cancer is caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). More so, it can be transmitted from one person to another through sex with an infected person.
It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Kenya.
After breast cancer, cervical cancer is the second common cancer in women.
Unfortunately, the study revealed that up to 6,000 people will perish from this disease if not checked before 2025.
Last year, a total of 5,250 women died from this deadly disease.
Cancer has been a threat in the country claiming the lives of many people including politicians and prominent people.
Kibra MP Ken Okoth, the late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso and also the former Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore died in July from Cancer.
