Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i on Thursday cracked the ribs of his colleagues in the Cabinet following his directive that all bars remain closed on Saturday and Sunday starting 6 pm.
During a televised joint cabinet press briefing in Nairobi, Matiang’i maintained that all bars will be closed by 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday urging drinkers to enjoy themselves between 2 pm and 5 pm and go back home in time for the census drive.
He said that from reports he has gotten from experienced drinkers if you are not drunk after three hours of drinking; it means you have a problem.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience that is going to be caused to you because we are asking that social places be closed at 5 pm. But look my friends, we are in this interesting situation we have to do this census and it is once in 10 years," he averred.
He added: "Under the law, social places like bars are opened at 2 pm on Saturday. You can go have your drink between 2 and 5 O’clock and more experienced people tell me that if you are not satisfied with beer for three whole hours, then there’s a problem with you."
Among those who attended the briefing are CS for Labour and Acting CS for Finance Ukur Yattani and CS for Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Joe Mucheru.
