Television host Tony Gachoka has blamed Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i for the financial crisis currently facing the country, arguing that he has failed to stamp his authority.
Dr Matiang'i was early this year promoted to chair the powerful National Development and Communication Cabinet Committee which monitors and implements projects.
Later in September, President Uhuru Kenyatta also shifted the Presidential Delivery Unit to his docket, ostensibly making him a de facto minister.
However, the increasing cases of pending bills have eclipsed the government, with Treasury CS Ukur Yattani saying that over Sh150 billion is yet to be paid to suppliers.
“This delayed payment of goods and services ... led to the deterioration of financial positions of businesses and in particular, the SMEs (small and medium enterprises),” Yattani, said in a statement late on Tuesday.
Gachoka now blames Matiang'i, arguing that he's in charge of the committee that should handle clearing of government debts, adding that he's yet to.
The media personality has now asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to take charge.
"The country is in crises as @TreasuryKe fails to avail cash for pending bills; @FredMatiangi heads cabinet subcommittee which has failed to deal with the cash crunch & now its upto Uhuru as President @StateHouseKenya to act! It’s disgraceful @KTNNewsKE #KTNBusiness #TonyGachoka," he said.
Uhuru is racing against time to deliver on his promises, with almost 34 months to the completion of his term in 2022.
