A number of politicians and state officers have been caught up in an academic degree certificate forgery fiascos, a fact that has threatened their professional and even political careers barely a year after the 2017 polls.
At least five powerful county bosses are under investigations by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Commission of University Education (CUE). Among them include:
1. Abdi Mohamed Mahamud
He is the currently serving Wajir County governor.
Abdi Mohamed is the latest governor to be named in the investigations over alleged fake certificate syndicate that a number of high profile politicians have found themselves in.
The EACC is now probing his alleged degree from Kampala University after Nchogu, Omwanza and Nyasimi Co. and Advocates wrote them a letter alleging that the governor submitted fake degree to the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to be cleared to vie in the 2017 gubernatorial elections.
2. Ferdinand Waititu
He is the current Kiambu governor.
His degree from Panjab University in Chandigarh has since been challenged in courts by his greatest rival and former governor William Kabogo.
The former county boss has filed several petitions in court, arguing that Waititu is different from the Clifford Ndung'u Waititu that is appearing in his academic papers.
He contended that Governor Waititu had applied for a change of names in the run-up to the 2013 elections, where he amended his names from his real Ferdinand Ndung'u Waititu to the questionable Ferdinand Clifford Waititu.
3. Ali Korane
He is the current Garissa governor.
His academic degree from the University of Nairobi has severally been challenged in court.
The most recent is a petition that was to be filed by Former CEC Idris Mukhtar just before he was shot in the head in Nairobi.
Mukhtar, through his lawyer Charles Kanjama, had challenged the credentials claiming they were fake.
4. Granton Samboja
The Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja has severally been summoned by the EACC over the authenticity of his academic credentials alleged to have been awarded by Kenyatta University.
The youthful governor is widely suspected to have involved himself in forging a university academic certificate and also using it to vie in last year's gubernatorial elections.
5. Hassan Ali Joho
The Mombasa County governor is alleged to be in possession of a fake KCSE academic certificate.
In a letter written in 2017 by KNEC’s acting executive Mercy Karogo Gathigia, Hassan Ali Joho never registered nor even sat for the 1992 KCSE exams at the alleged Serani Secondary School and also never owned the index number 160092024.
This meant that Joho could not proceed to higher learning minus a valid secondary school certificate.
