Kenyans who defaulted filing their tax returns may find themselves in a tight spot according to the Business Daily.
KRA is contemplating having the around 400,000 taxpayers to have their PINs deactivated and their pay cut because of defaulting on the payments.
The taxman has already sent notices to those who have not paid their dues to pay up within 15 days which lapse on July 30. If they fail to do so KRA, which is under a new Commissioner General James Githii Mburu, has warned of consequences in their bid to enforce the law.
Reports from the KRA indicate that about 3.6 million Kenyans filed their returns which was short of the 4 million they had targeted.
A message by the taxman to those affected said," Please make payments of Sh2,000 within 15 days ending 30 July failure to which attracts collection enforcement measures."
A taxpayer will have to pay the Sh2,000 or 5 per cent of the tax payable whichever is higher. Companies will, on the other hand, have to pay Sh 20, 000 or 5 per cent of the tax due whichever is higher.
Some of the measures that the KRA may resort to include deactivating the PIN numbers. This effectively prevents one from receiving their salary or supplier payments.
The tax collector has been under pressure to meet its growing revenue targets even as it reels under the failure of meeting previous targets over the past few years.
The new boss Mr Mburu was previously the commissioner for intelligence and strategic operations and it remains to be seen how he will manage his revenue target as a key part of his mandate.
