Bishop Thomas Kakala of the Jesus Cares Centre (JCC) church in Malindi Town has urged Christians to reject the Punguza Mizigo and Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) constitutional amendment proposals.
Kakala who is also the patron of the Malindi Pastors Fellowship rubbished the two constitutional amendment proposals, saying the two groups behind the proposals never consulted the clergy.
Addressing the press at the JCC church in Malindi Town on Monday, the Bishop expressed doubts on the legality of the BBI and the Thirdway Alliance teams who are championing for the envisaged changes.
“Typically, constitutional changes begin with the Parliament, which approves a committee to seek the views of Kenyans,” said Bishop Kakala, adding, “which Parliament approved the two teams to go round the country to seek the views of Kenyans?”
“The BBI and Punguza Mizigo are not about the common Mwananchi. Instead, they are seeking to meet the interests of a few individuals who believe the 2010 constitution is not addressing their selfish interests,” he said.
Kakala compared the process the two proposals have taken with the process of constitutional change in 2010, insisting that the committee of experts of the 2010 constitution called the clergy to present their views.
He emphasized that Kenya does not belong to a few wealthy individuals who want to accumulate power at the expense of all millions of Kenyans, including the clergy.
“Christians should reject any constitutional changes that do not have the input of the clergy,” insisted Bishop Kakala.
The Punguza Mizigo Bill which seeks to address the country's ballooning wage bill among other issues was approved by the IEBC after collecting signatures from at least a million Kenyan.
On the other hand, the BBI which was as a result of the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga is yet to release its report but it's believed the team will also propose a constitutional change.
