A section of Mt Kenya politicians have come out to affirm their support for President Uhuru Kenyatta, amid his apparent fights with his deputy William Ruto over the region.

This comes at a time when some area leaders under the Tangatanga faction of the Jubilee Party have been seen more close to Ruto, with some openly defying the president.

But Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange has dismissed the confusion being witnessed in the populous region, saying that whatever happens, leaders from the region remains behind the president.

"I think you are reading to much into some of these issues. The President is our region's political commander. We as leaders from the region are firmly united behind him,” he said.

He told the Star that Uhuru remains the region's political kingpin as has always been the case. His remarks on Uhuru's influence in the region were echoed by Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba.

Wamuchomba also told the public not to read much from the Sunday incident, where 12 of the 15MPs from Uhuru's Kiambu backyard snubbed a fundraiser he was attending at the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Ruiru.

She suggested that Uhuru secretly attended the function, hence the absence of the leaders.

"There is no problem if the President one day decided to walk quietly into a church anywhere across the country for worship. People are just blowing this issue out of proportion,” she said.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa, one of the absentees and a close ally of Ruto defended his absence, saying that he was not aware of Uhuru's visit and should not be blamed.

But only a week earlier, Uhuru was again snubbed by all area lawmakers when he opened a dispensary in Mangu, Gatundu South, where only area lawmaker was present.
