Tottenham Hotspurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked after a string of losses in the English Premier League.
In a statement, the club said the decision to end Pochettino's stay at the club had been a difficult one to take, but one that had to be taken.
"We were extremely reluctant to make this change. It is not a decision the board has taken lightly, nor in haste," Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said.
"Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing. It falls on the board to make the difficult decisions - this one made more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff - but we do so in the club's best interests, " he added.
Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinhohas been appointed new Tottenham manager.
"In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football," Levy said on Wednesday.
Speaking after his appointment, Mourinho said he was excited to join Spurs.
"I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me," he said.
Harambee Stars midfielder Victor Wanyama plays for Tottenham and has been on the bench for the better part of this season under Pochettino, fueling speculation that he would be sold to another club.
