A group of women on Saturday took to the streets of Nandi County to demonstrate following the release of a rape suspect.
The suspect, Phillip Bett, is the assistant chief of Cheptabach Sub-Location.
He was released by a Kapsabet Law Court on bond.
Bett is accused of defiling a 12-year-old girl at Bondeni village in Nandi Hills Sub-county.
The administrator pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared in court on Monday, he was freed on a Sh200,000 bond.
But the women who turned up in their hundreds took to the streets protesting against his release and increasing cases of defilement and rape in the county.
They accused courts of being lenient on suspected perpetrators, calling upon them to deal firmly with suspected offenders.
The women were led by area Deputy Governor Yulita Mitei, Health County Executive Ruth Koech and Nandi Woman Representative Tecla Tum.
Mitei said women will not take the issue lying down.
She called on the judiciary to get serious on the matter.
"We will not take it lying down. I am calling upon the authorities and especially the judiciary that we need more stringent penalties for people taking advantage of the vulnerable," she said.
