According to organisers, this year's event will be held on Sunday, April 26, in what promises to be a race to the finish line between Kipchoge and Bekele.

In October last year, Kipchoge became the first man in the world to run a marathon under 2 hours, during the INEOS 1:59 challenge in Vienna, Austria.

The Kenyan marathoner ran for 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds. However, the record was not recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), because it was organised outside the body's calendar.

On his part, Bekele is a former 5,000 and 10,000 metres Olympic champion, and his meeting with Kipchoge is expected to be among the most competitive London marathon has ever seen.

He moved over to marathon in 2014.

The Ethiopian says he is looking foward to racing against time, and of course against Kipchoge who has won 11 marathons in his career in 12 attempts.

“I’m looking forward to racing Eliud again. We have had many great battles over the years on the track, roads and cross-country," Bekele is quoted by Reuters.

“He is a special athlete but I feel my win in Berlin proved that I am still capable of winning the biggest races and in world-class times,” added the Ethiopian.
