Speaking during a routine tour to assess progress on an ongoing cleaning exercise along the Souki Mugdi road, Garissa Municipality Chief Executive Officer Abdirahman Shalle said that the township was on a mission to reopen all blocked waterways to avert perennial floods in future.

Shalle added that the drainages along Biashara Street, Postal Road and Kismayo Road were being done in the first phase.

"We are working on three specific tunnels in this first phase. As we repair Biashara Street, Kismayo Road and Posta Road waterways, I want to give a strong warning that anyone putting up structures along the drainages or even dumping wastes will face the law," Shalle said.

Barely a month ago, the County adopted a bill on municipality management allowing the town council to have a direct influence on issues affecting the township.

In the past, Garissa town has been witnessing flash floods along its feeder roads as a result of blocked waterways.

It is now hoped that the new exercise will open up the drainage systems, relieving the town off perennial transport problems during the rainy seasons.
