Is the politics of handshake on its death path?
That is the question political observers are asking themselves after the latest development within the political circles.
After the March 9 handshake which brought together President Uhuru Kenyatta and his political rival Raila Odinga, things started to change as the latter’s clout in government grew.
This even sent panic within Deputy President’s camp as they Raila had acquired a presumed higher position than Ruto in the government’s pecking order albeit without any position.
However, a decision by President Kenyatta to send Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka as his representative at the burial of Kofi Annan has left many wondering whether Uhuru and Raila are slowing ‘parting ways again’.
This is because Lusaka will be the special envoy representing Kenya in the funeral which will also be attended by Raila. In diplomatic handling, Lusaka will, therefore, be ranked higher than Raila.
“You must ask yourself why Raila could not be sent to represent President Uhuru and the government. Sending Lusaka as the official envoy in a platform attended by Raila is demeaning him (Raila),” Mutambo Wanjohi said.
He added: “On April 14, Raila represented Uhuru and the government at the burial of Winnie Mandela in South Africa. What has changed that Uhuru will send Lusaka in a burial also attended by Raila?”
The President recent also said that Raila has no official position in government.
