Police and military investigative organs have launched a probe into an incident where two soldiers died under unclear circumstances in Mombasa county on Sunday.
The two, Naftali Kimutai Too and Senior Sergeant Gilbert Mutai Kibet died at Mtongwe Naval Base, in what is suspected to be a case of murder and suicide.
According to the Standard, the incident happened after Mutai allegedly opened fire on Kimutai, before shooting himself dead as well.
However, senior police and military officials who confirmed the incident on Sunday declined to give further details on it.
However, according to the paper, Mutai who was on duty, secretly returned to the base at around 2am on Sunday and caught Kimutai who was on guard unawares.
Department of Defence Spokesman Bogita Ongeri said that a probe is ongoing in a bid to solve the puzzle, but said that it happened some minutes after 3am.
"The incident happened at 3.20am and investigations are underway," he was quoted.
