A section of students at Moi University main campus has requested the government to extend the deadline for the registration of Huduma Namba.
Speaking to Hivisasa on Thursday, the students cited various reasons as to why the government should put their plea into consideration.
Some of the student leaders at the Kesses-based institution also came out to support the request for extension.
“I know of many students who either lost their IDs and are in the process of acquiring them or those who didn’t come to school with birth certificates which can be used as an alternative. The government should not make Huduma Number emergency issues,” Moses Tisa, the former secretary general of Moi University Students Organizaion (M.U.S.O) noted.
A section of the students also felt that the government had failed on conducting a good civic education both to its citizens specifically the students in universities. Extra time is, the students say, is, therefore, need for them to understand the process.
“The government should increase the days of registration because students in campuses did not get a proper education of huduma number. Those who are registering are only doing it in good faith. A good number of people do not understand what the process is all about,” Albert Maloba, a vocal politician at the university pointed out.
The students also cited inadequate time as one of the reasons why the registration period was not enough.
“The government should extend the registration of Huduma Namba because we have not had enough time to register. Our classes run from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm hence making I hard for us to visit the registration centers. On weekends, the queues are usually long,” Ezekiel Kirui, a third year student stated.
The commitments that come with being a university student also played a major role in the students not getting ample time to register.
“Some of us have been heavily committed with the examinations and gathering the documents needed for Huduma registration has not been an easy task,” Avon Dido, an upcoming musician at Moi University stated.
The students also felt that the importance of Huduma Namba should not be confined within a given time frame.
“If Huduma Namba is as important as the government claims, then it should give people more time to register,” Kevin Wanjala said.
The deadline for registration is set for Saturday at 6 pm.
